Quel traitement pour une transsexuelle de 12 ans?

Kim, une jeune allemande de 14 ans, serait la «plus jeune transsexuelle du monde». Révélé récemment, son cas a suscité l'étonnement. Il est pourtant loin d'être unique.

En Allemagne, un enfant diagnostiqué comme transsexuel, reçoit depuis deux ans à Hambourg un traitement hormonal dans la perspective d'une réassignation sexuelle. Après avoir convaincu ses parents et ses médecins, qu’elle était née dans un corps de garçon, le jeune Tim, est déjà reconnu par ses proches, ses camarades et amis comme une jeune femme, Kim. Son père a expliqué avoir réalisé que sa fille «était terrorisée à l’idée de voir naître une pilosité faciale et sa voix muer.» Âgée aujourd’hui de 14 ans, la jeune fille a confié à la télévision que son souhait le plus cher serait de subir une opération de changement de sexe le plus rapidement possible. Elle ne pourrait être opérée en Allemagne qu’à partir de ses 18 ans. Malgré le bruit médiatique autour de cette affaire, il y a trois ans, une autre transsexuelle allemande de 14 ans, Johanna, et sa mère avaient obtenu du comité d'éthique allemand une décision autorisant la prise d’hormones. Par ailleurs, le traitement d’enfants aussi jeunes n’est pas inhabituel aux Pays-Bas, où un protocole a été institué pour leur prise en charge. Une situation encore lointaine dans d’autres pays. Militante trans britannique interrogée sur Pinknews, Persia West a déploré la situation dans son pays: «Pour une jeune personne, il est habituel, et cela fait même partie du protocole de traitement, de devoir subir le traumatisme de l'adolescence, avec ses effets physiques permanents, avant d'entamer un traitement».

Les sites de personnes trans regorgent de témoignages et de conseils aux adolescents en transition de genre: Comment en parler à ses parents, continuer ses études dans les meilleures conditions, contacter un thérapeute compétent. Particulièrement fourni, le site de Lynn Conway rappelle que les enfants transgenres/transsexuels se retrouvent souvent considérés comme malades mentaux et, comme tels, confrontés à des traitements psychiatriques autoritaires: «Ils souffrent effroyablement de tels traitements qui ont pour seul effet de retarder le transition – souvent jusque dans l'âge mûr – ce qui les privent de pouvoir vivre les plus belles années de leur vie dans leur vrai genre.»

Dans une version précédente de cet article, l'activiste britannique Persia West était citée comme déplorant la prise en charge de la jeune Kim par ses médecins allemands. Il s'agissait d'un contressens malheureux, pour lequel nous vous présentons toutes nos excuses.

12-year-old trans case "not unusual"

A 12-year-old Austrian child has undergone gender reassignment treatment after persuading his parents and doctors that she was sure she was a girl.
The child, known as Kim, was born a boy and is currently receiving hormone treatment which will eventually lead to gender reassignment surgery.
It is very unusual for someone so young to even be considered for gender reassignment.
Persia West, who is a transgender activist, spoke to PinkNews.co.uk about the case.

"It is absolutely not unusual for trans people to know from a very early age. Being transgender is a birth condition.

"The only difference in this case is that the condition of this child has been acknowledged they are acting on it."

Persia revealed that the use of hormonal treatment for children who are transgender is not restricted to this case - indeed it happens in this country.

"There is a clinic in London that deals with children but normally they will treat them chemically to stop adolescence.

"In the UK doctors wait until someone is 18 before considering surgery and that can be very traumatic for transgender people.

"Puberty is the time when the body goes through all these changes - for me it was like a horror story. However, sometimes kids change so that is the quandry that the doctors have."

Doctors and psychiatrists in Vienna diagnosed Kim as a transsexual two years ago when her dissatisfaction and unhappiness was felt to run far deeper than a temporary phase as her parents initially believed.
At 14, Kim is now officially registered as a female and she is reported to appear as any other girl would in her age.

Transsexual activist Persia West has asked PinkNews.co.uk to publish the following clarification of her comments on the reported case of a 12-year-old child in Austria who underwent gender reassignment treatment:

"It is entirely normal for a transsexual person to know that they are trans at an early age, even before the age of 12, as is the case of the young person in Vienna which has been given publicity recently.

"It is a birth condition and children too know who they are. It is not, however, normal for a young trans person to receive treatment, such as bringing a stop to the onset of puberty, in any clinic in the UK.

"It is entirely usual, in fact in the protocol for treatment, for a young person to have to undergo the trauma of an adolescence and it's permanent physical effects, entirely contrary to the nature of the individual before treatment is permitted.

"The case of the young trans person in Austria was newsworthy because she was actually given the treatment before her body was ravaged by the effects of those inappropriate hormones, despite her youth.

"This case highlights the need for greater understanding of the realities of transsexuality, by listening to trans people themselves, and diminishing the misunderstandings and fear which cause so much distress in their lives."
